In year 5, we were lucky to have the opportunity to build on our knowledge of Sikhism by visiting the Ramgarhia Sikh Gurdwara in Upton Park.  In year 5 we have been learning about Sikhism through two R.E modules. We first explored “How Sikhs show commitment to God” and then we looked at whether “Sikh stories are still important today?” The modules allowed children to make comparisons to other religions as well as other beliefs.

Our visit to the gurdwara allowed us to embed our learning and allowed the children further understanding to the religion and their values. The children came away understanding that one of the key focus areas of the religion was all about “Equality”. They now understand that everyone is welcome and no other belief, religion or values are above or below another.  After the mini lesson at the gurdwara the children were served refreshments to demonstrate the “Sewa”- the sharing of food to demonstrate ‘humility’ and ‘kindness’.  Another great learning experience for the children which we hope continue to be embedded as they continue through to year 6.
